Dr. Franklin W. Schwartz from School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University has been named as the 2021 recipient of the AGI “Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal”. This award is given annually by the American Geosciences Institute in recognition of “consistent contributions of high-quality scientific achievements and service to the Earth Sciences having lasting historic value”. The award recognizes Frank’s five decades of contributions to problems in groundwater contamination and supply, nuclear waste disposal, energy-related issues, geotechnical science and innovation, and sustainability. It also acknowledges his world-class research program, leading to textbooks with translations (China and Japan), and advice and assistance to corporations, consultants, and government agencies. The medal will be presented in September during the Awards Ceremony at the annual meeting of the American Association of Petroleum Geology (AAPG) in Denver.

After graduation from the University of Illinois, Frank rose through the ranks to become a professor at the University of Alberta. He joined the Ohio State University in 1988 as the Ohio Eminent Scholar in Hydrogeology. He has been recognized with other awards, including a Fellowship in the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union. Through his research, teaching, and writing Frank has provided generations of students the skills and geotechnical competencies necessary to succeed in academia, environmental consulting, and business. Today, Frank is actively engaged with Ohio State University’s Global Water Institute on problems of water access, geohealth, and resource sustainability, problems affecting the most vulnerable populations here in the U.S. and abroad.
