IS A SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT WATER INFRASTRUCTURE
REALLY POSSIBLE?
Safe and reliable water is a basic human need that is challenged by global climate change, population growth, and our aging and often misunderstood water infrastructures. Technological innovations and improved ecosystem management are critical to developing a more sustainable and resilient water infrastructure. Yet, the success of these technologies and ecological practices also depends on economic costs, government regulations, monitoring and enforcement, and public attitudes and acceptance of risks.
Interdisciplinary research that integrates knowledge from the humanities, social sciences, engineering, physical sciences and biological sciences is required to develop this holistic understanding and to guide future water systems.
