Brown Bag: From Focus Groups to Field Experiments: A Decade of Data Collection in Malawi

Voices from the Field Brown Bag Speaker Series
Studying the relationship between identity and politics in Malawi forces researchers to rely on a plethora of data collection methodologies, including oral histories, elite interviews, focus group discussions, large-scale citizen surveys, survey experiments, lab-in-the-field experiments, and field experiments. Amanda Robinson will highlight the challenges and opportunities that each of these methodologies has presented in her work, and she will offer suggestions for other field researchers who plan to employ them.

About the speaker
Amanda Robinson is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science. She received her Ph.D. at Stanford University and currently teaches at The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on cultural changes in African populations both in Sub-Saharan Africa and the US.
