AI-Powered Search for Potential Natural Hydrogen Reservoirs Beneath the Earth's Surface
Scientists at The Ohio State University's Byrd Center have pioneered a deep-learning model to spot surface features associated with subsurface deposits of naturally occurring free hydrogen. These features, known as semicircular depressions (SCDs), often occur in proximity to areas with natural hydrogen reservoirs but can be obscured by vegetation or agriculture.
Postdoctoral scholars Sam Herreid and Saurabh Kaushik presented their research during a poster session at the American Geophysical Union on December 11, 2023. They led research that utilizes AI and satellite imagery to identify SCDs on a global scale. Their research showcased the use of AI in mapping potential subsurface hydrogen reservoirs and is the foundation for further exploration in this field.
The project's principal investigators from the School of Earth Sciences are Associate Professor Joachim Moortgat and Distinguished University Scholar Ian Howat.
Hydrogen is emerging as an efficient, low-carbon energy source capable of reshaping the global energy landscape. This research helps proactively search for cleaner energy alternatives. Several years of development will be required for hydrogen reservoirs to become a reliable source of clean energy.
